Beware of the Anderson School of Staatsburg New York.

by George Deabold

IS THE ANDERSON SCHOOL USING AVERSIVE INTERVENTIONS ON STUDENTS AND WITHHOLDING THE INFORMATION FROM THE PARENTS?

The School Watch Task force received several reports on the Anderson school.

The first report was filed on july 17, 2008 ..The report was from a parent whose child attended the Anderson School in Staatsburg, New York. The child was removed from Anderson after the school attempted to force the child to be medicated, and threatened legal action against the parents if they did not consent to the medication. (This medication had already been tried on this child unsuccessfully, and forcing a child to be medicated in order to attend school is a violation of federal law.) After the child's removal he was returned to his home district that refused to provide programming and insisted that he return to the unsafe environment at Anderson. That legal battle with the Mexico Central School District has continued since January of 2007 and is still unresolved.

One of the parents recently took a job in a program for adults with disabilities. While in the program she met an adult in this program that was with her son at the Anderson School. This individual relayed that he had observed her son being restrained at the Anderson School as many as five times a day by multiple adults. The take-downs were described as particularly violent, including one that was so hard that her son's head "bounced off the floor."

The parents were never provided any documentation that incidents like this were occurring while their child attended the Anderson School, and although they were suspicious that physical abuse was occurring at Anderson, at no time did Anderson in form the parents of incidents such as this. While their son was at Anderson his behaviors seriously regressed, and he became more aggressive himself. (No wonder, considering the violence that he was being subjected to.) This is not the first such report of inappropriate behavioral techniques being used at the Anderson School. A short time ago the parents of Jonathan Carey learned their child was being abused at Anderson, removed him, and then sued the school. Meanwhile, Jonathan was placed in a group home where the staff of the group home restrained and killed him while transporting him in a bus. The New York State Education Department refused to take any action against the Anderson School as a result of the Carey incident, and they remain on the State approved list of private schools. Apparently, the abuse of students continues.

Parents whose children are being placed residentially should exercise caution. Our State Education Department is doing little, if anything, to ensure the safety of the students in some of these programs. Additionally, many of these programs are "bottom of the barrel" and exist out of necessity rather then because they provide quality education. New York State currently has over 400 children awaiting placement in residential facilities, and there simply are not enough schools of this type to address the needs of children in New York.

The Commission on the quality of care is supposed to ensure that these schools are safe for the children that attend there, but recent legislative investigations have revealed that the COQC has engaged in cover-up activities on behalf of schools such as Anderson. Often, investigations by COQC have simply taken the word of the schools attorneys or administration, with no true investigation into any allegations. The COQC is known to have worked hand in-hand with the NY State Education Department is whitewashing over misconduct at residential schools. Meanwhile, quality schools outside of New York State which could meet the needs of the 400 children on the waiting list are being denied State Education Department approval. One has to wonder how NYSED can allow 400 children to wait, unserved, when some quality programs out of state are available. One also has to wonder how NYSED can allow schools such as Anderson to continue to engage in conduct of this nature.

Good Morning,
The information that children are on waiting lists for placement in schools outside of the state of NY may be an error. As a former Vermont resident/advocate (Rick Mills then Commissioner) that issue was settled to the advantage of Vermont's children. The State cannot limit placement IF THE STATE IN WHICH THE SCHOOL IS LOCATED IS APPROVED BY ITS DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION. This was an issue years ago and Mills lost.

States are not Approved by the New york state Department of Education. Each out of state school(vendor) must apply and be approved.See the application for funds below. It is also a well known fact that hundreds of children wait for placment in the state of New York.I think we should all thank state ed. for all the red tape.State ed. has shown a high degree of contempt for children with a disability.State ed. at present is broken down and run by dishonest charlatans. It is a very sad situation.I dont want to sound or be melodramatic, but at this time I have to ask !

Well, wake up People of New York !Commissioner Richard Mills and SRO Paul kelly are feasting on the children.

nothing was inaccurate Karen just wants to get the public off topic.Karen and fran just dont get it.Schools and the state do whatever they want no one cares about a state ruleing, what mills said or thinks, or the law for that matter. The education system has run off the track and the train cars are now going over the children. The teachers unions want no reform or accountability.1/2 of the teachers in the class room should not be around children.

I have a son who resides at Anderson school. So far I have not seen evidence of abuse, in fact they seem to love him. However, after the articles I am reading, I wonder if I maybe need to be looking at what little incidents there HAVE been. And yes, there have been some. Things that did not seem right to me. However, I have been BEGGING the state of NY to tell me how to place my son in a group home in Montana. Or someplace close to there because I am a single parent and I want, or actually NEED to move out of the US. I am a recent rape victim. There's more to this story than a child in a residential school. I seriously need help and want very much to move my son out of NY so that I can still know him when I move to canada. The only thing I am being told, as a single parent of a child living in a residential school in NY State is this.. The funding for group homes has dropped .. there are no beds available. They have found him a placement that suits him. They aren't sure what type of a young man my son is, however have found him suitable placement and it's in a group home near a residential school that I turned down before putting him in anderson because I saw evidence there of things not right. I am being told that the school can't keep him after graduation, where as before I was told by two different people in the school .. one administrative and one staff that they do keep kids after graduation if there is no group home setting in place and it is needed by the parents. But now I am told they wont. So after graduation, since so far there is no group home because the group home that they did find is being restructured to fit my son and they dont know what kind of a kid my son is ..... so far, the last word is that my son is coming home. All of this is happening right now when I have just lost my mother... I am getting over a recent rape event .. I am doing executor duty on my mother's estate .. facing losing my house because I don't think the bank is going to give me the mortgage .. and even if they do give it to me and I am able to go back to work ..... when my son graduates and they send him home because there is no funding and I can't get any help to help guide me in what to do .... I will have to quit my job that will have been paying the bills to look after a child that should be in a group home but isn't because NY State dropped the ball. This is sick. What is being done realistically to help these kids out? How many little kids have to die at the hands of under trained staff before something gets done ... and how many will just be abused and fall through the cracks. If anybody out there knows anything at all ....... PLEASE Email me. Because I am getting no answers so far.
