Correcting Dyslexia:Â Ron Davis Shares His Radical Approach
Chicago, Illinois: World-renowned dyslexia expert Ron Davis will speak about his inspiring story and his radically different perspective on how to correct dyslexia from 7 -9 p.m. on October 14th at the Hilton Chicago, 720 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL. Â To register online go to http://www.rondavislectures.com/Oct09/chicago.html
Â
Molly McFadden, an extremely bright nine-year-old, found reading painful. Even though she went to an excellent school in Naperville and had a great deal of assistance, she still hated to read, and reported the words “flipped, stretched, and disappeared†and that reading caused headaches and dizziness. Â
Â
Ron Davis understands Molly’s challenges. Davis was considered autistic from infancy. His parents misunderstood his severe learning disabilities and at school he was labeled mentally retarded.
Â
Ron fought his functional illiteracy to become a successful engineer, businessman and sculptor. At the age of 38, Davis discovered a way to “switch off†the mental processes that caused him to see printed words in a distorted way. For the first time, he read a book cover-to-cover without struggling. He has gone on to write three books including the internationally acclaimed book, The Gift of Dyslexia.
Â
Ron Davis’ methods are taught in 40 countries, his books have been translated into 16 languages, and more than 600 people recently attended his lecture in Mexico City. He has had over 200 newspaper, radio and TV interviews including CNN, CBS Radio, NPR, Fox TV and the San Francisco Examiner.
Â
Davis believes that dyslexics share a multi-dimensional, picture-thinking style, and are less predisposed to word-based thinking. Making children with dyslexia into word thinkers, says Davis, is like “trying to run an IBM program on an Apple computer—it’s just not going to work.â€Â Teaching approaches that emphasize phonics and phonemic awareness will naturally pose challenges for dyslexic individuals with a lack of verbal thinking.
Â
Davis says, “Once we can see the mechanics of dyslexia, it’s really very simple to see how it can be corrected.†According to Davis, confusion with symbols and abstract words (like “theâ€) causes a dyslexic’s perception to distort - resulting in transpositions, mistakes, fatigue, and frustration while reading and writing. Treatment comes by helping dyslexic individuals to address both the perceptual distortion and the underlying confusion with symbols and words.
Â
Molly McFadden finally found relief for her pain at the Chicago Reading and Dyslexia Center. Her mother says, “The Davis Program really stopped Molly’s symptoms. Rather than have our bright daughter spend hours and hours memorizing high frequency words and practicing phonics as other programs recommended, the Davis program got right to the root of what caused her reading difficulties. Now she likes reading and she finally learned left from right. Also, she seems to really understand what causes her dyslexia and she sees it as a gift -- the Davis program was like super-hero training for her to use that gift.â€
Â
The lecture is hosted by local Davis Dyslexia Correction Facilitator, Kim Ainis of the Chicago Reading and Dyslexia Center. It is designed for parents, teachers, and adult dyslexics. Pre-registration for the lecture is highly recommended.
