It's great that high school students who drop out of the system are recognizing the need for more education, and the GED is a great tool to help them get launched in the right direction.

However, the GED has also become a powerful tool for students who are highly motivated to go to college rather than the traditional population of high school drop outs. These "smart outs" are taking the GED at 16 (depending on their state guidelines) and entering college early in order to get more relevant learning in a more adult setting.  These "bold schoolers" are leapfrogging over their test-dazed AP classmates and gliding into the global economy at 19 or 20 with a red-hot college diploma, sizzling 21st-century skills (including fluency in at least one foreign language), and no debt.

More good news:  this path is far more affordable than the typical four-by-four model (four years of high school, four years of college).  In fact, many low-income students are using the GED to finish high school, start college, and get scholarships for college expenses and study abroad opportunities.
