By way of introduction, I am neither mathematician nor mathematics teacher, but I majored in math and have used it throughout my career, especially in the last 17 years as an analyst for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Those closely watching the Obamas and what they are going to do next, have surely noticed that they have elected to send their girls to Sidwell Friends School in DC. The National Math Advisory Panel (NMP), which was formed two years ago, released its final report on March 13, 2008. One of the principal messages of the report is that “the delivery system in mathematics education … is broken and must be fixed.†Such a statement is hard to ignore, so it was only a matter of time before someone on the Hill would look into what it would take to fix the broken system.

Part 1 of 3
Anyone who has been involved in the debates surrounding math education (and there are more than a few such people) have come across the arguments that “Traditional math doesn’t work†or “The old way of teaching math was a mass failureâ€.
