Neal McCluskey
Neal McCluskey is a policy analyst with Cato's Center for Educational Freedom. Prior to arriving at Cato, McCluskey served in the U.S. Army, taught high school English, and was a freelance reporter covering municipal government and education in suburban New Jersey. More recently, he was a policy analyst at the Center for Education Reform, where he published papers on subjects ranging from cyber charter schools to class size reduction. McCluskey's writings have appeared in such publications as the Baltimore Sun, the Washington Times, the Orange County Register, and Forbes, and he has been cited in periodicals ranging from Wired News to U.S. News and World Report. In addition, he has appeared on C-SPAN, CNN, and the Fox News Channel. McCluskey holds a master’s degree in political science from Rutgers University.

There’s a lot of conjecture about who will be the next U.S. Secretary of Education. At least based on the campaign, however, it shouldn’t matter. Barack Obama’s impending move to the White House, and Democrats’ domination of Capitol Hill, should be the best education news we’ve had in years. Finally, there’s a party in charge that wants to give us back our schools. Well, at least give us back a little.

Save Parents the Lecture

Are there things that parents could do to improve education? Sure, but they don’t need presidential frontrunner and presumptive winner Barack Obama lecturing them on getting involved in their kids’ learning. What they need is real power over their kids’ education. What they need is school choice—but that’s something for which Obama refuses to use his bully pulpit.
